Some coaches left the factory with a shallow ring or two up front. Plenty left with nothing at all — a molded dash, a windshield the size of a patio door, and, on a Class C or an older gasser, the engine doghouse sitting between the seats like a bench nobody meant you to use.
Ask about it in an owners' group and you'll have twenty answers inside an hour. A console organizer trimmed to fit the hump. A marine gimbal screwed into the wall by the driver. A length of PVC. "I just hand it to my wife." Some of that advice is genuinely good. Some of it will put coffee in a lap on the first sweeping on-ramp.
What follows sorts it into three piles: what actually holds while the wheels are turning, what only holds once you've stopped, and what to stop buying.
This isn't an oversight. It's a seam between two companies.
Your coach was built by at least two of them. On a Class A diesel, a chassis maker delivers rails, running gear and steering to the coach builder's specification — By one chassis dealer's account, over 80% of all Class A diesel motorhomes are assembled on Freightliner's XC chassis, which is built in four configurations (XCS, XCL, XCR and XCM) for builders like Newmar, Tiffin, Winnebago and Entegra (Transwest). Then the coach builder puts the house on top — and on a Class A, "the house" includes the dash. That dash cap is the coach builder's molded part, laid out for switches, vents, a radio and a steering column, and designed differently on almost every floor plan.
Which means there is no OEM accessory to order. No part number, no dealer bin, no Ford catalogue page. When an owner on The RV Forum asked what to replace a doghouse console with, the honest answer came back that he probably wouldn't find one, because there are simply too many layout variations across models (The RV Forum). You are going to be adapting something. That's the category, and knowing it up front saves you two or three purchases.
Class C is the other case. You keep the Ford cab, so you inherit whatever Ford put there — usually a shallow ring or two sized for a 1990s travel mug — plus the doghouse, which is not furniture. More on that in a moment.
The cab is really two rooms, and almost every bad recommendation comes from confusing them.
Room one: the wheels are turning. A dash is sloped and a doghouse is sloped, and slope matters more than most people think. On a level laminate counter, friction has one job — resisting a sideways nudge. On a sloped dash, gravity is already pulling the cup downhill before you touch anything, so part of the available grip is spent just holding station. Now add the constant buzz of a V10 or a diesel under load, which briefly unloads the contact patch thousands of times a minute, and then add a brake application or a long banked ramp with 26,000 pounds and a toad behind you.
Nothing that merely rests on that surface survives all three at once. Not a rubber dash mat. Not museum gel. Not a tray. Not a tacky base — including ours. If you take one thing from this page, take that: underway, a drink holder has to be fastened to structure, not set on a surface. Everything else is a matter of when, not whether.
There's a second reason. An unrestrained object in a cab is a projectile, and the cab is where the two of you sit.
Room two: parked, slides out, chairs swiveled. Completely different problem, completely different answers. We'll get there.
This is the highest-leverage thing on the list and it costs nothing.
Hot beverages are usually served between 160 and 180°F, and a spill at that temperature can cause burns severe enough to require skin graft surgery; at only 140°F it takes five seconds or less to do serious damage (IAFF, General Information on Scald Burns). A lid does not stop a cup from moving. What it does is change the consequence from a burn to a rolling bottle you can deal with at the next pull-out.
So the campground ceramic mug — the good one, with the handle — stays in the galley on travel days. Up front you want a screw-top bottle or a genuinely lidded travel mug. Half the cockpit drink problem disappears when the container stops being open.
The best no-new-holes mount in a cab is a fastener that already exists.
RAM's A-pillar base is the pattern worth copying: it feeds a 6 mm cap screw into an existing grab-handle bolt hole for "a stable mounting base with no drilling required" (RAM Mounts). Their published fitments are pickups and Broncos, not an E-450 or a Spartan cab, so this is a principle rather than a part number — go look at what your grab handle, seat frame or seat pedestal is bolted with, and match it. Two rules if you do: use the original grade of fastener, and put it back to the original torque. A seat mounting bolt is not a place to improvise.
The same page carries the caution that belongs on every cab modification: "Do not install this product near or over an airbag deployment area or in a location that obstructs the driver's vision or interferes with vehicle operation." Class A dashes vary enormously and Class C cabs have labeled airbag zones. Find the labels before the drill comes out.
Screwing a holder into the sidewall next to the captain's chair is the oldest fix in the forums and it works, because it anchors to structure. Two things to check before you commit: what's behind that panel — wiring runs, window frame, entry door mechanism — and what the panel is made of. Thin luan or a fiberglass skin needs fender washers or a backing plate behind it, or the screws will work loose exactly the way everything else in a coach works loose.
Marine hardware is the right shelf to shop from here, and it's worth knowing how it actually tests. Practical Sailor put ten drink holders through lifeline, rail, binnacle and bulkhead mounting trials. Its rail, binnacle and bulkhead winners all fastened down with screws. Its lifeline winner did not — that category's favorite was a hook-over stainless wire holder, the Handi-Man Sail-a-Long, whose hanging wire "swings on all axes" and is "bent to prevent the holder from jumping loose in a rough sea." The hang-on design that failed outright was the one relying on an open hook: the Orbex Sail-Buoy was dropped from the test after it "jumped ship during a seatrial," the hook staying put on the lifeline while the basket — and the beer in it — went missing underway (Practical Sailor). Sailors have been solving the moving-drink problem for a hundred years, and the split in their results is the useful part: screw it to something, or hang it from something in a way that positively captures it. Setting it down is not on the list.
The honest limit of a gimbal is its ring. Gimbal holders were sized for cans and mugs, not for a 12-inch tumbler, so a tall insulated cup rides loose and rattles — which is why koozie-as-shim keeps coming up in owners' groups. And a wall mount serves exactly the one spot it's screwed to.
Depth is the failure, not diameter. If the cab has a ring that lets a bottle hop out over a bump, the right fix is an expander or adapter insert that grips inside the existing ring and gives you a deeper, wider cradle. Owners recommend these directly — the Swigzy-type adapters and, in the cheerfully RV way, ABS plumbing couplings dropped into an existing hole purely to gain height for a travel mug (The RV Forum). Look for the versions with a U-shaped side slot; that's the only geometry that accepts a handle.
Two numbers worth carrying in your head before you buy any of it. A 40 oz Stanley Quencher has a base around 3.1 inches, weighs 1.18 lb empty, and 40 fluid ounces of water is roughly another 2.6 lb — so the thing lands near four pounds full, before ice (Stanley). Meanwhile RAM's self-leveling Level Cup takes containers 2.5 to 3.5 inches in diameter and is rated to 2 lb in standard use, 1 lb in heavy-duty applications (RAM Mounts). Your Quencher fits the diameter and roughly doubles the weight rating. That mismatch — the cup fits, the mount can't carry it — is behind an enormous amount of "universal fit" disappointment.
On a Class C the engine cover is the obvious shelf. It is also the only way into the engine, and coach builders did not make that easy. Owners describe covers held by a pair of sheet metal screws near the dash plus a hex screw buried in the carpet at the rear, one of them "tucked just far up through a tiny peep hole that no conventional allen can reach," and a cover that is "an absolute BEAR to get back in place" — with one member noting he'd have been in deep trouble needing emergency roadside access (The RV Forum).
So: mount to the doghouse if you like, but mount to the cover, with a plate, so the whole assembly still lifts out as one piece. Do not build a bridge from the doghouse to the dash, do not run a permanent shelf across it, and do not put a hole saw through it. The day you need to check coolant on the shoulder of I-40 is not the day to discover you glued your engine shut.
And a console organizer sitting loose on top of it is not a mount. It is a good place for maps, sunglasses and a capped bottle of water. It is not a place for hot coffee.

Non-slip mats and tacky pads on a sloped dash. They're excellent on a level surface and outmatched on this one, for the reason above.
Museum gel and earthquake putty. It was designed to hold objects that stay put, on a shelf, indoors. A dash behind a Class A windshield in the desert is a heat problem, and a drink you pick up every ninety seconds is exactly the use case the stuff isn't for.
Suction cups on a grained dash. Dash vinyl is textured on purpose, to kill windshield glare. Texture is the enemy of a suction seal.
Anything loose on the doghouse while moving. See projectiles.
Drilling the dash blind. Airbag zones, wiring looms and a fiberglass dash cap with nothing structural behind it. Ten minutes with a flashlight beats a repair.
And above all, stop reaching for it. In the 100-Car Naturalistic Driving Study, whose findings VTTI and NHTSA released in 2006, reaching for a moving object increased the risk of a crash or near-crash by nine times, and nearly 80% of crashes involved some form of driver inattention within the three seconds before the event (VTTI/NHTSA, via EurekAlert). That research was done in cars. You're driving a house with a car on the back and a stopping distance to match. If the cup goes, let it go. The whole point of the lid is that letting it go is survivable.
Here's the part the cockpit conversation usually misses. The cab spends most of its life parked.
Chairs swivel around, the slide comes out, the windshield becomes a window, and the front of the coach turns into the front room. Now the surfaces in play are flat and rigid: the galley counter, the dinette top, the little cockpit table, the step-well ledge, the arm of a camp chair on the gravel pad outside. The braking is gone. The vibration is gone. What's left is a coach parked a degree or two off, a table with some play in the pedestal, and someone sliding into the booth.
That is a completely different physics problem, and it has a much simpler answer: give the drink a wider base to fall out of.
That's what the Steadi base does, and it's the only claim worth making for it. No screws, no hole saw, nothing to leave a mark on a coach you might sell.
Its limits, stated plainly, because this audience has been sold to before:

The coach was never going to hand you a good answer up front — the seam between the chassis maker and the coach builder guaranteed that. But the problem is solvable in two halves, and the halves have different solutions. Bolt something to structure for the miles. Widen the base for everything after the parking brake goes on.
